Hitting the wall December 29, 2008 N. Durham (Philadelphia, PA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Another year, another Need for Speed game; we all know the drill. Instead of basically putting a little new polish on an old title, Need for Speed: Undercover instead finds EA's long running street racing series reverting back to the days when the franchise was churning out tired and boring installments. Undercover follows the same formula we've pretty much seen with Need for Speed: Most Wanted onward, only Undercover hardly has any of the charm, or fun factor, of that game, Carbon, or Prostreet. The open world setup of the game just comes off as being a pointless feature considering there isn't too much that you can actually do in it. Add to the fact that the city itself just bland, lifeless, and dull. The racing itself isn't too bad though, although it won't take long to get repetitive and just come off as what you've played before in countless other Need for Speed games, albeit done much better and more exciting. The game's soundtrack is decent though, but sadly, the PS2 version is loaded with opposing cars that pop-up out of nowhere, and a graphics engine that is in need of a serious upgrade, and really finds the PS2 showing its age. All in all, Need for Speed: Undercover doesn't offer anything you haven't played before, and sadly, anything you've played better either.
I had some doubts from the reviews, and videos but i guess... i was wrong! December 28, 2008 paramorefreak12795 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
the title says it all! I really did think that this game was going to be a 2 star game like pro street, but that was before i played it! Need for speed mostwanted has been the best nfs ever, and i really did think it would stay that way! I was worried to play undercover do to the fact pro street was bad! when i played it it quickly became a favorite, better then nfs mostwanted! The cars on here are great! Better then pro streets! my estimated rating before i even got it was about 4.0! Tuning your car is great, i mean people said it was bad, but really its no different then people think it is! if i could give this game more then 5 stars i would! The only thing i had a problem with was getting tons of cash was easy, but also in a way its pretty helpful! My choice of a starting car is the nissan 240SX! i used that car for most of the game and then bought a porsche cayman S! Its fast and cool!
More fun than NFS Most Wanted December 22, 2008 migueloncito (The Angels, CA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I feel a bit sad for those apparently jaded gamers who rated this fun new addition to the NFS oeuvre so low. If you love the fast driving and chasing aspects of most of the NFS series this should be very fun. The physics are great with the ability to send cars flying and do seriously wild maneuvers. As for the graphics, while certainly falling short of the PS3 version, they are better than the earlier entries in the series. The image blurring with NOS is intense. This game has some of the most wide open and largest drving spaces of any game ever.
A step back December 9, 2008 Alexei (CALEXICO, CALIFORNIA United States) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
My 9 years child said, the graphics aren't good, "Need for Speed Carbon" and "Most Wanted" have better graphics. I agree with him. I feel more adrenaline playing these games.
I think better graphics will give a nice adrenaline boost, the history it's good, but overall, I think Carbon and Most Wanted, are better games.
P.D. If you're a Need for Speed series fan, you don't expect a better game than Carbon or Most Wanted.
If you're new playing the series, I give a 7.0 grade of a 10.0 scale.
Undercover is a Step Backwards from Carbon December 7, 2008 Edward A. Sture (Fergus Falls, MN USA) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'm a big fan of the NFS series, so I'll make this short. There is no redeeming quality to this game, it doesn't show anything new or special or amazing enough to keep your interest.
I liked Carbon, thought it was fun, had a few interesting ideas, I was sad to see they left out a few game modes like Drag. The customizable vinyls were a great invention here.
I liked Pro Street, but only because the graphics and customization was really detailed. The thing I *DID* like was, aside from different teirs of cars, all the performance parts and vinyls and paints were unlocked from the start, and the only thing holding you back was money. You could have a pretty cool looking car, even at the beginning. The gameplay was suffering in some areas, like controls being a little sloggish, and having no story other than *beat these races to unlock these races to unlock these races*.
---= And now for NFS : Undercover. =---
First off, the controls suck, they're WAY over sensetive. You have to understand, I play Pro Street with the handling turned on expert, and I know all about using the ebrake, taking corners, and powersliding. In this game, your car jerks left and right and turns on a dime, allowing you to take corners going 50 miles an hour with no difficulty at all. If you TRY to slow down and e-brake, your car will probably spinout and do a 180. The first 5 seconds of the game shoved me into a getaway chase, and i kept slamming into cars along the highway, because i'd TAP the arrow key only to jerk wildly and overshoot my delicate steering.
The graphics are a huge let-down. It's not only a step back from Pro Street, but I honestly find myself wondering if Carbon looked better than this game.
The customization of your car has been CRIPPLED. All of the upgrades need unlocking, so you're back to the "I have to drive a crappy looking car until i beat half the game" syndrome. Also, while in the shop for vinyls, a happy little popup informed me
"To Increase Online Performance, Vinyls will not be displayed in Multi-player Mode."
...WHAT?! Fail. Fail fail fail.
Also, don't be tricked by them telling you the game has open-free roam racing. You still have magical barriers that appear in races, making all the courses linear, unlike the Midnight Club games.
the ONLY good thing about the game, is that the map is huge. They took every complaint about Carbon being too short, and seem to have added 2-3 more city areas to the world map. Unfortunately, the game is so absolutely unbearable, that after playing for a few hours, I couldn't take it anymore.
Skip this game, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON IT. WAIT UNTIL THEY PRODUCE A DECENT GAME, AND NOT THIS SHODDY-RIPOFF. I'll be waiting for the next in the series. They've let me down, and I'll hope they learn their lesson to please the fans, not screw us over.
