 A Sense of Realism in a Mad Max kind of World January 8, 2009

First of all I had the opportunity to purchase the game for $39, but I decided to rent it before I bought it because of some of the reviews. Don't get me wrong it is cool, but won't be for everyone. The game starts off pretty slow, but is at least entertaining. There is a lot of bad language, which can be annoying for some. The game has a nice sense of humor with the graphics and little jokes here and there. The character development is top notch, the graphics are great, and I like the choice between the two methods of battle. The scenery is cool, but becomes dull after hours of traveling through the repetitive landscape. It may be different on the other half of the map, but I doubt it. I played for around 12 hours and I started to feel just lost. I believe that I was completing mission, but didn't really get any sense of progression other than receiving a home. The apocalyptic world is pretty tough and challenging and doesn't seem to ever get any easier. From what I read from other reviews the back guys stay at par so you never really get ahead, Oblivion seemed to have a little more variety in the difficulty of bad guys. Guns suck when the other guy has them. I did alright keeping my own in battle against a number of guys but would be low on resources afterward. I'm sure that this gets easier with exp. It definitely gives a sense of what it might be like in the future, but I think this one might be a little too realistic. Overall it was a good game and one could spend hours of time wondering around but for me it wasn't worth the purchase for me even at $39. If you want a FPS get Call of Duty World at War and if you want a RTS get Civilization Revolution, at least that's what I did.

First, I have never played Fallout 1 or 2 and yes I have played Oblivion...
I bought this because of the good reviews and my interest in first person shooters. When I poped it in and started the game I was pretty excited in watching the intro for things to come. Then the game began.....
Let me state that I was not a big fan of Oblivion. A few things I didn't like was the "talking head" screens where you have to simulate a corny dialog with a poor voice actor.... I also always thought it was pretty poor that when I opened a door, it didn't actually show the door open (I know, a silly complaint) - instead there's a door noise and all of a sudden you're on the other side. I thought the combat was cluncky and unnatural and the quests were complex and uninteresting.
All of this seemed to carry over to Fallout 3, and boy was I (initially) dissapointed!
I dragged myself through the "vault" portion of the game only to see what the wasteland looked like. That's when I started geting interested in the game...
Upon leaving Vault 101 I found my way to Megaton. After poking around there for a while I started out on a few quests, and got myself hooked in further. Since then I've been playing daily and seemed to get drawn in further as I go. At the advice of other reviewers I didn't follow the main quest. Instead I started working on the secondary quests and trying to level up. Each level increases your charecter's health and abilities so the game seems to get easier as you go along. At this point I'm pleasantly surprised that I'm enjoying it as much as I am. I'm glad I stuck with it despite my initial reaction.
Yes, all of those things about Oblivion that bothered me are still there (although seemingly not as bothersome), but I've learned to live with them. In my opinion terming this game "Oblivion with guns" is accurate in comparing the mechanics of the gameplay. The themeing is very different, and possibly a little more straightforward. I think that's what keeps me playing.
Lastly, this is not a FPS. It's an RPG! The gun play is as RPG as the Oblivion swordplay, just more gore....
With the amount of gaming in this title (assuming you don't go straight for the main quest), it's worth picking up. Just be sure to make it out of the vault so the fun can begin!
 Dark & Violent with No DLC January 7, 2009

I started out loving the game. Good grahpics and interesting story. In the end, the material was just too dark for me. I finished as I just had to, but the game lost too much with dead families and torture scenes. Great concept and execution though. One sad note is there will be NO down loadable content for the PS3, but only for the other platforms.

Oblivion was a good game. I played it. A lot. But I always found myself bored or frustrated with the overall pacing. I always wanted to make cool weapons or spells but couldn't because I didn't have a high enough skill or lack of soul gems. I always wanted to do cool missions but my weapons did no damage and broke after a few minutes. Oh well, I'd tell myself, time to go explore another random cave that looks EXACTLY like the last one I'd explored. I sure hope theres at least one good item to be had amongst all the useless garbage this time.
At first I had some similar issues with Fallout 3. I was quickly overburdened by the weight of the items I had picked up along the way. Every new item became a game of throwing away something else to make space for it. My weapons did almost no damage and VATS ran out way too quickly. But then something happened.... I found a place to stash my stuff and got a large cache of guns from a story mission. Now I am slowly exploring the wasteland and loving every second of it.
The PS3 version looks and runs great; I have had to restart the game once to fix a poor frame rate but at least it went away. I've heard the 360 version is better but without actually seeing it there would be no way I would think the PS3 version was less awesome.
Some may find the game hard to get going at the beginning. Each level up presents so many options that it is hard to choose the right one. Rest assured though; great gaming awaits you once you find your groove.

This game got such great reviews that I asked for it as a christmas present. I played it for about a total of 10-15 hours and didn't like it very much. I have never really played an RPG before but could stand the talking with people. I found some aspects of the game very annoying though.
I don't know how far in you have to get to get some cool weapons but after approx 15 hours of play I was still a long ways from being able to pick the lock to the armory. All the other weapons you pick up from dead people don't have much ammo and are usually in bad condition.
Also, not enough ammo was readily available. You have to waste ammo on mutated animals as you investigate the wasteland who are good for nothing except radioactive meat.
Vats is cool at first where the player can freeze the game and aim for a certain body part with a percentage that your shot will hit. However after a major fire fight it gets annoying having to freeze the game every 5 seconds to shoot. Shooting without Vats is damn near impossible.
Couple things I did like were
The graphics and sound are good. I like the slow motion kill shots. However some of the shots are a little too much I didn't need to see a angry dogs head fly off.
I liked having a pet dog though who can be your buddy as you investigate the wasteland. That was cool sorta like I am Legend.
Overall I could see why some have rated this well. If you are like me somewhere between a casual gamer and hardcore than this game may not be for you. I like to sit down an play video games for a little while this game requires a lot of time that I was not willing to invest. If you have the time to play you will probably enjoy this game. I gave it 3 stars cause overall the quality of the game was good but the fun aspect of the game was lacking for someone without major time to play.
