Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops boasts ground-breaking online play that lets gamers recruit comrades to form a unique fighting force. The game follows the events of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, as Naked Snake establishes FOXHOUND in an attempt to hunt down the treacherous FOX unit, which has started a bloody revolt in South America. Set in 1970, the game will be the missing link in the ongoing Metal Gear saga, as players will learn more about returning characters such as Para-Medic, Major Zero and Sigint and also witness Naked Snake's greatest tragedy -- a loss that sets into motion the events of later games in the Metal Gear Solid timeline. Full voiceovers for cinematics, performed by returning cast from MGS3 - Snake Eater

5 out of 5 stars I love it   January 8, 2009

First off, Amazon was the only place I could even find this game because it had already been out for a while. All I could find was Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus, but I already had that and wanted to start over from the begining. The game play is very entertaining and the graphics are great too, especially compaired to some of the other titles I've seen for the PSP out there.

3 out of 5 stars When Snakes fight Foxes, the result is epic   December 24, 2008

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops is a fine game tha tells the rest of the story of how the Patriots and Foxhound rose and how the events of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 came to pass. The plot is eerily reminisciant of Metal Gear Solid, even more so than the other MGS titles, but in a way that makes you realize just how similar Solid Snake was to his father.

The controls are a little confusing at first, but one gets used to them quickly. The character models are goregeously rendered, the environments are decent, but some things, like the hexagonal truck tires are just horrible and make me laugh.

The biggest problem I have with this is the cutscenes, which are not Computer rendered, and are instead hand drawn and animated by some 2 bit artist with no talent. Cutscenes like these were acceptable in 1994, but on a PSP, they scream of laziness. Props for the returning cast of Snake Eater though, and they are as good as they were then, except David Hayter is really the only one you actually HEAR out of all of them for most of the game.

On a whole, if you've considered buying Metal Gear Acid or Acid 2, BUY THIS INSTEAD.

4 out of 5 stars Metal Gear!!!   December 15, 2008

While not as smooth as I would have expected a MGS game to play on the PSP, portable ops is still a solid experience. The cut scenes are great although they aren't in game. Go check out meta critic for a more in dept reviews.

5 out of 5 stars All the Metal Gear Greatness in the palm of your hand!!!   November 6, 2008

MGS Portable Ops is the sequal to Metal Gear Solid 3 and is a must own for people who are looking to play MGS4!!

4 out of 5 stars Portable Kidnapping Game   October 27, 2008

The game is pretty much a must-have if you want to play through all of the "canon" story of Metal Gear Solid. It fleshes out Big Boss' character as well as a few others.

Control-wise, I must say it definitely falls short of Metal Gear Solid 3 and 4 due to the limitations of the PSP (no right analog and only two shoulder buttons). It is a bit awkward controlling the camera no matter how you customize the controls, but you get used to it over time.

The overall gameplay is pretty addicting, thanks in no small part to recruiting. That is what I spend most of my game-time doing. The funny thing about recruiting is that it essentially is kidnapping. You knock out an enemy soldier and drag him to your creepy truck.

As you might have guessed (or probably know from elsewhere) in Portable Ops, you control more than just Snake--you get to play as any one of your recruits, except for the guy who is perpetually in the truck. This includes the generic-looking masked soldiers, mechanics, and doctors/scientists as well as the handful of unique story-related characters and secret characters.

Fending off the enemy with firearms feels kind of clunky, but this is because I generally do not use my any guns aside from tranquilizers. My play style involves sneaking around and using CQC (close quarters combat) to knock out the enemy and then recruit them (yes, I recruit every enemy on each map almost all the time).

The game's story is fairly engrossing, especially if you have played the previous games (particularly, MGS3).

Overall, the game is fun and addicting. Controls are pretty good. Gameplay is fun thanks to recruitment and the joy of knocking soldiers out before they know what hit them. And the story is worth your time, especially if you want to get the full Metal Gear Solid experience.
